One handle that becomes many weights — a dial, pin, twist grip, or switch selects how many plates lift out of the cradle with the handle. That's the cradle-style family; spin-lock and loadable handles do the same job manually. Check the increment size and whether the maker rates it for dropping, because most aren't.

A stationary bike whose resistance is a big fan: the harder you pedal and pump the arms, the harder it pushes back. On a pure air bike there's no resistance dial to hide behind and no way to make it quiet — though air-magnetic hybrids add a settable magnetic brake on top of the fan, which also allows a quieter easy ride.

A rack with machine systems built in — usually cable pulleys, sometimes a Smith bar or lat/low-row station. "All-in-one" is a broad label, so check exactly which stations are included and at what pulley ratio.

A thick straight bar, usually with fixed non-spinning sleeves, from strongman competition. The fat diameter makes your grip the limiting factor — often long before your back or legs.

Dumping the bar when a rep fails — backward out of a squat, or down onto the safeties. Your equipment plan has to allow for it: safeties or spotter arms to catch the bar, and clearance around you.

Short posts on a rack or platform that anchor resistance bands, so the bar gets heavier as you lift it (lifters call that accommodating resistance). Band tension pulls hard on the rack — one of the reasons anchoring instructions exist.

Standard barbell size families, named for the competition classes they serve — not a rule about who may use them. The 20 kg / 28 mm men's bar and 15 kg / 25 mm women's bar are the weightlifting classes (the women's bar is also shorter — 2.01 m vs 2.2 m, which matters for narrow racks). Powerlifting's one-bar-for-all standard is the 20 kg / 29 mm power bar under IPF rules; some federations also allow meet-legal squat and deadlift bars. Youth and technique bars are lighter again.

No coating at all — the steel you feel is the steel of the shaft. Top-tier knurl feel (matched only by stainless), and the first finish to rust: bare bars want regular brushing and a light oil.

Small rolling elements — usually needle rollers, sometimes balls — between a bar's shaft and its sleeves that let the sleeves spin fast and freely. Common in bars built for the Olympic lifts, where quick turnover under the bar matters. Bushing bars spin slower and usually cost less.
A squat station that hangs the load from a belt around your hips instead of a bar on your back — legs work hard with the load off your shoulders and far less compression through your spine. Comes as a standalone machine or a rack attachment; cable, lever, and direct-loaded designs feel noticeably different.
A thin dark conversion coating that keeps most of bare steel's grip feel while adding a little rust protection — but only a little. Black-oxide bars still want the same brushing-and-oil care as bare steel.

Some racks and stands must be fastened to the floor or a platform before use — the maker says so, and it's a requirement, not a suggestion. Flat-foot racks trade that for long floor rails; dynamic work like kipping pull-ups or band tension raises the stakes either way.

How much a dropped plate rebounds. "Dead bounce" bumpers stay put — what you want indoors and in a garage; high-bounce plates hop, which is annoying at best and a shin hazard at worst.

A squat bar with a gentle arc across the shaft. The curve lets your shoulders sit in a friendlier position than a straight bar demands — a popular pick for lifters with cranky shoulders.

Weight plates made of dense rubber or urethane, built so a loaded bar can be dropped from overhead — the standard for Olympic lifting and conditioning work where reps end with a drop. The light plates are the exception: thin 10 lb and 5 kg bumpers usually can't take drops alone, and makers' warranties say so. Drops always want a sensible surface under them.

Thin rings of bronze or composite that sit between a bar's shaft and its rotating sleeves. Bushings give a smooth, controlled spin — the standard choice for all-around and powerlifting bars. Bars built for the Olympic lifts often use bearings instead for a faster spin; a few bars mix both ("hybrid").
Plates individually adjusted to hit their stated weight within a tight tolerance — we only band a plate as calibrated at ±10 grams or tighter. Thin steel calibrated discs are the powerlifting-meet standard; "calibrated" speaks to accuracy, not to any federation's stamp of approval.

A bar whose loaded ends hang well below the part you hold or carry — the camber drop, stated in inches or degrees. The hanging weight swings, so every rep demands more control from your trunk. Squat versions are the classic, but cambered bench-press and row bars work the same way.

The gated metal clip (or U-shaped clevis) that connects a handle to a cable machine's end. Opening size and load rating decide what it can safely carry — the humble part every cable attachment depends on.
A patch of knurling in the middle of a bar's shaft. It grips your shirt during heavy back squats so the bar doesn't slide down your back — but the same texture can scrape your neck and chin on cleans, which is why many all-around bars leave it off.

A thin ceramic-polymer coating applied to a bar's shaft and sometimes its sleeves. It adds real corrosion resistance and comes in many colors, but like any coating it can wear at the spots where metal rubs metal — the J-cup contact points above all.

"IPF certified" or "IWF certified" means the federation actually approved that product for competition. "Built to IPF/IWF spec" only claims the maker followed the published dimensions — no approval involved. The price difference between the two phrases is often enormous, so read them precisely.

Small plates for small jumps — change plates cover the steps between full plates, and fractional plates go smaller still (down to fractions of a pound) for lifts that progress slowly. The cheapest fix for the plateau where every available jump is too big.
Continuous horsepower (CHP) is what a motor sustains; peak HP is a burst figure measured differently. The two aren't comparable, and brands quoting peak numbers look stronger on paper than they are — compare CHP to CHP or not at all.
The oversized strongman dumbbell — huge heads, thick handle, pressed overhead one-handed. Loadable versions let you build up to event weights.

The clamps that keep plates on a sleeve. Spring collars are the cheap squeeze-to-open clips; lever (lockjaw-style) collars snap shut with a cam; screw-on collars thread down tight. Competition collars are heavy precision pieces that double as part of the loaded weight.
The meet-day unit: a squat stand and bench station in one, built for fast height changes between attempts (jack handles, lever adjustments). What you see on a powerlifting platform, and increasingly in serious home gyms.

A fixed flat bench built to meet dimensions — meet-spec pad and height on a heavy, stable base. The bench-press specialist's bench, as opposed to an adjustable that does everything.

Mixed-modal training that blends barbell lifts, gymnastics, and conditioning at intensity. Its equipment fingerprint: a rack that can take kipping pull-ups, bumper plates, a multipurpose bar, and a floor that forgives drops.

A horizontal tube tying two rack uprights together. Structural by day — and a mounting point by night: some attachments bolt to a crossmember rather than to an upright.

A longer, thinner bar that deliberately flexes: you build tension and start rising before the plates leave the floor. That flex is the point — it's a specialist tool, not a defect.
Cast-iron plates with a raised outer lip and recessed center — the classic machine-age look. The lip makes some plates easier to pick up off the floor; the cast thickness can eat sleeve space faster than flat steel.
Parallel dip bars that mount to a rack, saving the footprint of a standalone dip station. You need clearance to swing your legs on whichever side it mounts — inside the cage for drop-in bars, out front for face-mounted ones — and a rack rated for the leverage.

Whether the maker sanctions dropping the item. "Approved" means explicitly rated for drops; "not rated" means they say don't; "not covered" means dropping voids the warranty — a distinction worth catching before your first missed jerk. Iron plates and most dumbbells are not drop equipment.

The patch of floor built to take dropped barbells — thicker rubber, a platform insert, or dedicated drop pads. You don't need the whole room drop-rated; you need the spot where the bar comes down, with a little margin for bounce and roll.

A hardness score for rubber and foam, read with a Shore gauge. Higher numbers are firmer — but Shore A and Shore C are different scales, so a Shore-C foam number can't be compared to a Shore-A rubber number.

The maker's intended-use class: residential, light-commercial, or full-commercial. The labels are marketing shorthand for expected daily abuse and warranty terms rather than a cited test grade — a residential rating on a home machine is normal, not a red flag.
Short for electrophoretic coating: the part is dipped and an electric charge bonds a thin, even paint layer everywhere — including inside corners sprays miss. A common mid-tier bar and rack finish.

Some flexible bars are spec'd by an effective load range — the window where the bar oscillates as designed — rather than a single capacity number; others publish a plain max weight limit. Below the range the oscillation barely happens; above it you're outside the maker's performance window, not a published rating.
The weight you feel at a cable machine's handle after the pulley ratio does its work — on a 2:1 machine, about half the stack number. We show it only where the maker publishes it; we never compute it ourselves.

The light, soft foam of puzzle-tile flooring. Fine under bodyweight workouts and light equipment; it compresses and tears under racks and dropped barbells — that's rubber's job.

The short zig-zag bar. Its bends angle your hands partway between palms-up and neutral, which many lifters' wrists and elbows find far friendlier for curls and extensions than a straight bar.
Flat, Incline, Decline — an adjustable bench that covers all three. Worth checking: how the seat adjusts along with the back, whether decline needs a leg holder, and how big the pad gap is when flat.

Our shorthand token for a rack's mounting interface — upright size, hardware size, and which face the holes are on, like "3×3, 1-inch". Attachments listing the same ecosystem are made for that interface; closed proprietary systems get a named family token instead, because sizes alone don't describe them.

A rack base with long rails lying on the floor, front to back. The rails make the rack stable without drilling your slab — the renter's favorite — though hard dynamic use can still call for anchoring or ballast.

The share of peak impact force the floor takes out of a drop, from the maker's published lab test. More is not automatically better: cushion protects joints and slabs under drops, but too much makes the floor unstable under a loaded rack or a heavy pull. Match it to the use — don't maximize it.

Two independently adjustable cable columns side by side — the do-anything cable machine. Most run dual weight stacks (some are single-stack or plate-loaded), and most use 2:1 pulleys, so read the stack numbers with the ratio in mind.

A station with hip pads and anchored footplates for glute-ham raises, back extensions, and weighted trunk work. The name is the acronym; the hamstring work is the reason it exists.

Anatomical shorthand you'll see on cable-attachment filters: pronated is palms down or away, supinated is palms up, neutral is palms facing each other. Different orientations shift which muscles do the work and how joints line up.

Artificial grass lanes for sled pushes, sprints, and conditioning. Two specs recur: face weight (ounces of fiber per square yard — how much yarn is in the surface) and pile height (blade length). Sleds run best on short, dense pile.

Two main uprights (often with a rear support base) — you lift in front of the rack, not inside it. Frame depth varies (some run as deep as a power rack once you count the base), and the lifting zone out front needs clear floor of its own; the win is open sides and walk-in access, not automatically less room. Spotter arms stand in for enclosed safeties.

Thick industrial chrome plating — harder-wearing than decorative chrome, with good rust resistance and a slightly slicker feel than bare steel. A long-running favorite for shafts and sleeves.

The diameter of the pins and bolts an attachment hangs on. Two families — 5/8-inch and 1-inch (metric racks run 16 mm and 25 mm versions) — and they don't interchange. Match the peg, not the hole: upright holes are bored slightly oversize on purpose.

The six-sided fixed dumbbell — the flat faces keep it from rolling away and let it double as a push-up or renegade-row handle. The default shape for a fixed set.

The center-to-center distance between an upright's holes. It sets how finely you can place J-cups and safeties, and it must match for attachments that bolt through two holes at once.

How a plate's center bore is built. Bumpers use a metal insert — steel or stainless, some hooked so they bite into the rubber; competition discs run a plated steel disc; cast iron and one-piece urethane plates have no separate insert at all. On cheap bumpers a weak hub is the common failure point, so it's worth a look.

The pad top lands inside the International Powerlifting Federation's 420–450 mm band — meet-height for bench press. It's a dimension match, not a federation certification; competition bars and full approval are a separate (much pricier) matter.

Machine arms that move separately, so each side works alone and your strong side can't quietly carry the weak one. "Linked" arms move together; some machines let you choose.
The J-shaped hooks that hold a bar in a rack, named for their side profile. Good ones are lined with tough plastic (UHMW) so the bar's knurl and finish aren't grinding against bare steel every time you rack it. Sandwich-style J-cups wrap the liner in side plates for extra bar control.

Swinging, momentum-driven pull-up styles popularized by CrossFit — a kipping muscle-up carries the same swing up and over the bar into a dip (strict muscle-ups skip the swing). They're a legitimate skill, and a violent load on a rack: the swing yanks the frame in ways strict pull-ups never do, which is why kipping is the question that decides whether your rack needs anchoring.

How sharply the knurl bites: passive, moderate, aggressive, very aggressive. Useful comparisons, not standardized measurements — one brand's aggressive is another's Tuesday. Sharper knurl holds a maximal deadlift; friendlier knurl spares your hands over high-rep sets.

The smooth rings that interrupt a bar's knurling. They're hand-placement landmarks: Olympic weightlifting marks sit wider apart (910 mm) than powerlifting marks (810 mm). "Dual-marked" bars carry both sets so one bar can serve both styles.

The shape of each knurl point. Diamond is the standard pyramid cut; hill rounds the peaks off gently; mountain leaves them sharp; volcano removes the point's center, leaving a grippy crater ring that holds on without shredding palms. Names describe geometry — brands don't cut them identically.

The crosshatched grip texture machined into a bar's shaft. Feel ranges from mild (often called passive) to sharp (aggressive); powerlifting bars usually run sharper knurl for grip under maximal weights, while all-around bars stay friendlier to bare hands.

A pivoting socket that anchors one end of a barbell to the floor or a rack, so the free end sweeps through an arc — rows, presses, squats, rotational work. One of the cheapest ways to add a whole movement family to a rack.
The classic paired cable station: a high pulley to pull a bar down to your chest, a low pulley for seated rows. Comes standalone, as a rack bolt-on, or folded into all-in-one trainers.

Long plate-loaded arms that pivot on a rack upright — pressing, rowing, and squatting movements on a machine-like arc, at a fraction of a machine's footprint. The extended load tries to tip the rack, so it needs countering — bolting it down, front foot extensions, or weight on the back of the rack.

A dedicated deck — wood in the middle for your feet, rubber strips at the sides for the plates — that helps spread drop impact and gives deadlifts and Olympic lifts a firm, flat surface. Framed versions capture the layers inside a border.
A bare handle you load with your own plates and collars — the budget path to heavy dumbbells if you already own plates. Check the sleeve length, the plate bore it takes, and how big the plates get before they hit your forearm.

How much of each sleeve can actually hold plates. More loadable length means more plates fit on the bar — it matters once you lift heavy with thick bumper plates, which eat up sleeve space fast.

The strongman log: a big barrel with neutral handles set inside cutouts, cleaned and pressed as an event lift. Barrel diameter is the headline size — bigger logs are more awkward, which is the point — with empty weight and handle spacing close behind.

Quick-release rack pins held by a magnet instead of a hitch pin or clip — they secure attachments like spotter arms, safety bars, and dip bars to an upright without fumbling hardware. They replace the short attachment pin, not a cage-spanning pin-and-pipe safety; diameter and length still decide the fit.

Magnets braking a flywheel without touching it — near-silent at the brake, with no brake wear, adjusted by lever or motor. The quiet counterpart to fan and water resistance on bikes and rowers.

No motor: a curved deck of slats that your own stride drives. It plugs into nothing, self-scales to any sprint, and works most runners noticeably harder at a given pace than a motorized belt.
Rack hooks that swing out of the way once you stand up with the bar — no walking the weight out before a squat. A meet-day fixture in some powerlifting federations, and a walkout-sparer at max loads.

How an attachment grips the rack: a single peg through one hole, a two-hole bracket, drop-in, clamp-on, hook-on, strap, or keyhole. It's the first thing fit branches on — a two-hole mount cares about hole spacing, a clamp-on cares about tube size. ("Sandwich" you'll mostly meet on J-cups, where it names the cup's steel-UHMW-steel construction.)

A frame — flat or cambered — with several neutral or angled handles inside it, keeping your wrists and shoulders in friendlier positions than a straight bar allows. Handle spacing and angles vary a lot between models.

The do-everything bar: middle-of-the-road diameter (usually 28.5 mm), moderate whip, dual knurl marks, bushings. Built to be pretty good at squats, presses, pulls, and the occasional Olympic lift — the default first bar for a home gym.

A low bench that anchors your ankles so you can lower your torso forward under hamstring control alone — one of the hardest hamstring movements there is, and the bench exists to make it accessible.

The sport of two lifts — the snatch, and the clean & jerk — both taking the bar from floor to overhead in explosive movements. Its equipment demands are specific: whippy bearing bars, bumper plates, and a floor that takes drops.

A bar built for the snatch and clean & jerk: fast-spinning sleeves (usually bearings), lively whip, weightlifting knurl marks, and a center knurl that's passive if present at all — men's IWF-spec bars carry one, women's 15 kg bars and many training bars don't. The specialist tool when the barbell is meant to move fast.

The space between an adjustable bench's seat and back pads when it's flat. A big gap puts your hips in a hole on bench press; "zero-gap" designs close it entirely — one of the quiet quality markers on adjustable benches.

Contoured handles designed to spread the pull across your whole hand, so it works as a hook instead of a squeeze — the cable version of taking grip out of the equation so back work stops ending when your hands do.

The plate's center-hole size. Olympic plates run about 50 mm to ride an Olympic barbell sleeve; "standard" plates take a 1-inch bar. Everything serious lives in the Olympic world — check the bore before buying plates for any loadable handle or machine.

The kilogram convention: red 25, blue 20, yellow 15, green 10, white 5 — read a loaded bar at a glance. Pound plate lines use their own palettes, and plenty of home lines are simply all black.
The pegs plates hang on — on a rack, a tree, or a wall bracket. "Horn" is the trade word; sleeve diameter, usable length, and your plates' thickness decide how many each one really holds.

The commercial-gym fixed dumbbell: plates bolted around a handle with flat end caps, usually rubber or urethane heads. Rebuildable, round (so it wants saddle storage), and built for decades of rerack abuse.

The cable machine number that fools the most buyers. On a 2:1 machine the handle moves twice as far as the stack and delivers about half its weight — so a "300 lb" stack presses like roughly 150. 1:1 machines deliver the stack as labeled with shorter cable travel. Check the ratio before comparing stacks.

Quench-polish-quench: a salt-bath nitrocarburizing treatment that hardens the steel's own surface rather than painting over it. Very hard, very rust-resistant, usually black — a premium sleeve and shaft treatment.

An attachment claiming to fit any upright within a stated size range — usually strap-based or clamp-based rather than pinned. The claim is the maker's; on anything load-bearing, treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee.

Whether a bar's shaft is long enough between the sleeves to rest on both J-cups of a normal rack. Shorter specialty bars often aren't — a non-rackable bar still lifts fine, it just starts from the floor or from blocks instead of the rack.

An added bay of uprights behind a rack — four posts become six, carrying storage, band pegs, and (on deeper kits) a second lifting bay. The classic "grow the rack instead of replacing it" upgrade.

You lie chest-down on the pad and swing your legs up behind you against resistance — training the glutes, hamstrings, and low back without a bar's direct load on the spine. Powerlifting invented it as a back-friendly posterior-chain builder; its makers also claim a spinal-traction effect, which is their claim, not settled science.

The rowing machine — "erg" is short for ergometer, a machine that measures work, which is why rowers are the cardio piece with a number culture. Air, water, and magnetic resistance versions all train the same full-body drive.

The catch system in a rack — the reason heavy solo lifting is reasonable at all. Pin-and-pipe spans the cage in steel; straps catch quietly and spare the bar's finish; flip-down rails move fast; spotter arms reach forward from open racks. Set them just below your lowest position — and with straps, allow for stretch: they deflect downward when they catch a bar, so mount them at least as high as you would pins, often a hole higher, and test with a light load first. A missed rep then lands on the system instead of on you, provided the rack is assembled and rated for it.

A padded yoke bar with forward handles and cambered sleeves: your hands hold grips in front of your chest instead of reaching back, and the pad carries the bar. The go-to squat bar for lifters whose shoulders won't tolerate a straight bar — and a brutally honest trainer of upper-back strength.

Resistance chosen by moving a pin in a built-in stack of plates — one motion, next weight. Fast and tidy versus plate-loaded's cheaper, slower flexibility. The label describes the selection, not how much resistance actually reaches the handle.

The thickness of the part you grip. 28 mm suits smaller hands and quick lifts, 28.5 mm is the all-rounder, 29 mm is the stiff powerlifting standard, 27 mm is the whippy deadlift-bar spec, and 25 mm is the women's weightlifting bar (women's powerlifting uses the same 29 mm bar). Past 30 mm you're into squat bars and axles. Thinner flexes more; thicker feels stiffer.

The usable shaft length between the two sleeves. It decides whether the bar reaches both J-cups of your rack (rackability) and how much room wide grips and wide shoulders have.

A standing machine you pull down on with both handles, like double-poling on skis — savage upper-body and trunk conditioning in a small footprint (wall-mounted, or on a floor stand). "SkiErg" is Concept2's name; the category has other makers.

A weighted steel frame you push or drag across turf or pavement — brutally simple conditioning with almost no skill requirement. "Prowler" started as one maker's model name and became the generic word for the push sled.
The end section of a bar that plates load onto — about 50 mm (2 inches) in diameter on standard Olympic bars. On most barbells it rotates on bushings or bearings, which keeps spinning plates from twisting the bar out of your hands; welded specialty frames often have fixed sleeves that don't turn at all.

A barbell fixed to guide rails, with hooks to rack it at set points along the way. Rails run vertical or angled about 7–12 degrees — the angle shifts the bar path, which changes which way you face and where the bench sits. Counterbalanced versions offset the bar's own weight, some to effectively zero, so check the real starting weight before comparing to a free bar.

The threaded-handle adjustable: plates go on, star collars spin down to lock them. Slow to change and old-fashioned — also cheap, extremely durable, and tolerant of rough handling, with one habit attached: threaded collars work loose with use, so snug them before every set.

Safety arms that project forward from the uprights of an open rack or stand, catching a missed rep out where you actually lift. Because the load lands in front of the frame, rack stability and the maker's mounting rules matter more than with enclosed safeties.

A specialist bar for heavy squats only: longer, thicker (often 32 mm), and stiffer than a power bar, with aggressive knurl that stays planted across your back. Its extra length can be awkward in a small rack or room.

The minimal rack: two posts and J-cups, the smallest footprint that holds a bar at height. Pair it with spotter arms and honest self-assessment — there's no cage around you.

Rust resistance in the metal itself, not a coating — so the knurl feel is bare-steel sharp and there's nothing to chip or wear through. The premium option for shafts, sleeves, and anything that lives in a humid garage.

The classic 4×6-foot, ¾-inch recycled-rubber mat sold for horse stalls — adopted as the default gym floor because it's cheap, dense, and extremely durable. Expect some rubber smell early on; vulcanized and virgin-rubber flooring costs more partly to avoid it.

What a machine weighs against you before you add anything — the empty carriage, sled, or press arms, felt through the machine's angles and leverage. It's the real minimum load, and it's why "empty" on two different machines can feel nothing alike.

The load a bar is rated to hold sitting still — the maker's stated capacity, not a standardized test. It says nothing about repeated drops or fatigue, and it is not the same thing as tensile strength.

A measure of steel-tubing wall thickness — and the number runs backwards: lower gauge means thicker steel, and a given gauge is the same thickness whatever the tube (11-gauge ≈ 3 mm / 1/8-inch walls, the common spec on racks built for heavy training). What gauge can't do is rank strength across different tube sizes — a 14-gauge 2×2 bench frame and an 11-gauge 3×3 upright are built for different jobs. Metric makers skip gauge and publish millimeters.

A horizontal rail lagged into wall studs that storage pieces then hang from — one properly anchored rail instead of a dozen separate wall holes. The wall-storage backbone; it's only as strong as its anchoring.
The sport of heavy odd objects: log press, axle, yoke carries, stones, farmer's walks. Its implements double as brutally effective general training tools, which is why logs, sleds, and circus dumbbells show up in ordinary home gyms.

A light bar (often 5–15 kg, sometimes aluminum) for learning lift mechanics before a standard bar is appropriate. Check its load limit and whether it's rackable — technique bars are not all built alike, and none of them are for max attempts.

How much pulling stress a bar's steel can take before it breaks, measured in PSI (pounds per square inch). It's a rough durability signal — 190,000 PSI and up is common in quality bars — but it says nothing about how a bar feels, and it is not the same as the weight the bar is rated to hold.

Fatter handles — 2-inch pull-up bars, axles, thick-grip attachments — that force your hands and forearms to work far harder at any load. A training effect you opt into, not a comfort feature.

A frame you stand inside, holding neutral handles at your sides — deadlifts with the load centered on your body instead of in front of it. Most offer two handle heights (high shortens the pull; low sits near straight-bar height), and open-back frames let you step in and out freely for carries and lunges.

A short frame with two neutral handles — extensions, hammer curls, and close-grip presses with your palms facing each other. The small sibling of the Swiss bar.

The twin-tailed rope with stopper ends — pushdowns, face pulls, curls, overhead extensions. Length matters more than it looks: long ropes allow a fuller split at the bottom of a pushdown.

Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene: the tough slippery plastic lining good J-cups and safeties. It keeps bar knurl and rack finish from grinding against bare steel and quiets the clang — a small material doing outsized protective work.
A rack's vertical post — the steel everything else bolts to. Its cross-section size, hardware size, hole spacing, and which face the holes are on together decide which attachments can ever fit, which is why rack shopping is really upright shopping. Wall thickness is a capacity spec, not a fit spec — except for hook-over attachments, whose mouth has to clear the steel.

The outside cross-section of the rack post in inches — the first key to attachment fit. Two wrinkles: metric racks sold as "3×3" are usually 75×75 mm, about 1 mm under a true 3-inch (76.2 mm) tube, so a cross-system attachment can sit slightly loose or snug; and 60×60 mm racks match no imperial class at all — their own size, not a near-2×2.

The premium coating and head material on plates and dumbbells: harder-wearing and less smelly than rubber, with colors that hold up instead of scuffing gray. You pay for it — urethane is the commercial-gym spec.

Virgin rubber is newly made compound — tighter, less odor; recycled crumb rubber is ground-up scrap (usually tires) bonded back together — cheaper, often thicker, and the usual source of new-mat smell. Both make honest plates and floors; the label tells you what trade you're making.

Volatile organic compounds — the chemistry behind new-rubber smell. Flooring with FloorScore or GREENGUARD certification has passed third-party indoor-air-emissions testing; uncertified rubber's smell typically fades with airing out.

Rubber cured with heat and cross-linking into a dense, tough, low-odor sheet — sold as the premium tier of gym flooring. The word describes the processing, not whether the feedstock was virgin or recycled.

The built-in column of plates a selectorized machine draws from, chosen with a pin. Read it with two caveats: our multi-stack listings rate per stack (not the sum), and the pulley ratio decides how much of the stack you actually feel.

How far a plate's real weight may drift from its label. On our banding, calibrated means ±10 grams or tighter, competition-grade about ±1%, training plates about ±2–3% (federations set their own exact limits). It matters when loading must balance — a pair of loose-tolerance 45s can differ by more than a pound.

Rack uprights drilled every 1 inch through the bench-press zone (with wider spacing elsewhere), a pattern named for Westside Barbell. The fine spacing lets you set J-cups and safeties at exactly the right height for benching, where an inch is the difference between a clean unrack and a bad setup.

How much a bar's shaft flexes and springs back under load. Olympic lifters use whip to their advantage between pulls; powerlifting squat and bench bars are built stiff so the bar stays put — while deadlift bars go the other way and add flex on purpose.

A heavy two-post frame built to be carried across the floor loaded — the strongman event — that doubles as an open squat station with J-cups and safeties fitted. One frame, two very different jobs.

Plated zinc — the long-running budget-standard bar finish, in shiny "bright" or dark "black" versions. A sacrificial layer that trades itself to protect the steel; it wears at contact points and dulls with use, which is normal.

The damper is the lever (1–10) that controls how much air enters a rower's fan cage — it changes how the stroke feels, like gears on a bike, not how hard you're working. Drag factor is the monitor's measurement of how fast the flywheel slows between strokes; effort is calculated from that, so a damper of 10 doesn't earn you anything.

Rogue's own published durability scale for its barbells, based on cyclic bend-testing that simulates dropping a loaded bar from overhead. The number is a multiple of a baseline cycle count — F1 is roughly 35,000 test cycles, F2 twice that, F6 six times, with top tiers running far higher — and an "-R" suffix means the shaft is treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH), the company's proprietary strengthening process. It rates drop durability only — not feel, spin, or whether the bar suits your training.

Rogue's two big rack families both use 3×3-inch 11-gauge uprights — the split is the hardware: Monster runs 1-inch pins on 2-inch hole spacing; Monster Lite runs 5/8-inch pins with the Westside hole pattern. Pinned attachments do not cross between them; buying into one family is buying its hardware size.

Titan's published rack families, per their own comparison chart: T-2 is 2×2-inch 14-gauge with 1-inch holes; T-3 is 2×3-inch 11-gauge with 11/16-inch holes; X-3 is 3×3-inch 11-gauge with 11/16-inch holes; the TITAN series is 3×3-inch 11-gauge with 1-inch holes. The series name is first of all compatibility shorthand for which Titan attachments fit — though it tracks build too: Titan's published rackable capacity climbs from about 850 lb on the T-2 to roughly 1,650 lb on the X-3.
